French Alps
Lake Annecy is the purest lake in Europe, surrounded by forested mountains and overlooked by a charming medieval old town. The city offers an extraordinary blend of outdoor activities, gastronomy, and relaxation that makes it equally appealing in summer and winter. The old town (Vieille Ville) is Annecy's crown jewel — the Palais de l'Ile, a 12th-century castle sitting on a tiny island in the Thiou canal, is one of the most photographed monuments in France. The canals that thread through the old town are lined with flower-covered houses, artisan boutiques, and cafe terraces that create an atmosphere of effortless Alpine charm. The lake itself is a revelation: turquoise waters so clear you can see the bottom at ten meters depth, surrounded by mountains that plunge directly to the shore. Strict environmental protections since the 1960s have made it a model of ecological preservation. Activities on the lake include paddleboarding, sailing, kayaking, and paragliding from the surrounding peaks — the thermals above the lake are considered among the best in Europe for paragliding. Talloires, on the eastern shore, is home to the legendary Auberge du Pere Bise, one of the finest restaurants in the Alps, with a terrace directly on the water where gastronomic lunches last well into the afternoon. The Gorges du Fier, just ten kilometers from the town, offer a dramatic walkway suspended above a narrow limestone canyon carved by millennia of rushing water — a hidden natural wonder rarely found in guidebooks. For winter visitors, the ski resorts of La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand are just thirty minutes away, offering excellent skiing without the crowds of the major resorts. Annecy also serves as the ideal base for exploring the northern Alps — Chamonix and Megeve are each about an hour's drive through stunning mountain scenery. The Imperial Palace hotel on the lakefront combines Belle Epoque grandeur with a casino, spa, and private beach, while boutique properties like Le Clos des Sens offer intimate luxury with a two-Michelin-star restaurant.

For the best lake experience, rent a private electric boat from the port — no license is required and you can anchor in secluded coves on the west shore that are inaccessible by road. Pack a picnic from the Tuesday market.
