Crystal-clear waters, a fairy-tale old town, and the gateway to the northern French Alps.
Lake Annecy's water is so pure you can see the bottom at 10 meters depth. Strict environmental protections since the 1960s have made it the cleanest lake in Europe, and it shows — the turquoise color is breathtaking.
The old town (Vieille Ville) is Annecy's crown jewel. The Palais de l'Île, a 12th-century castle sitting on an island in the Thiou canal, is one of the most photographed monuments in France.
The canals that thread through the old town, lined with flower-covered balconies and pastel facades, have earned Annecy the nickname 'the Venice of the Alps.' The Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday markets along the canal banks are among the finest in the Savoie — look for Reblochon cheese, dried sausage, and local honey from alpine wildflowers.
Activities on the lake include paddleboarding, sailing, kayaking, and swimming. Private boat tours offer the best perspective, with views of the surrounding mountains and the elegant lakeside villas.
For swimming, the Plage d'Albigny on the north shore offers a manicured beach with mountain views, while the wilder eastern shore near the Bout du Lac nature reserve provides a quieter, more natural experience. Water temperatures reach 24°C in July and August, making the lake genuinely swimmable for extended periods.
Talloires, on the eastern shore, is home to the legendary Auberge du Père Bise — one of the finest restaurants in the Alps, with a terrace directly on the water.
The Auberge du Père Bise, originally founded by François Bise in 1903, has been reimagined by chef Jean Sulpice, who brought his two Michelin stars from a previous address. The lakeside terrace, shaded by ancient plane trees, serves cuisine rooted in Savoyard tradition but executed with precision and lightness. Reservations should be made at least two weeks in advance, more in summer.
The Gorges du Fier, just 10 km from Annecy, offer a dramatic walkway suspended above a narrow canyon carved by the river over millennia. It's a stunning natural experience rarely found in tourist guides.
For hikers, the Tournette (2,351m) is the most prominent peak visible from Annecy and offers the most comprehensive panorama of the lake and surrounding Alps. The standard route from the Col de l'Aulp takes approximately three hours to the summit and is suitable for fit walkers with mountain experience. The reward — a 360-degree view from Mont Blanc to the Chartreuse — is extraordinary.
Annecy is also the paragliding capital of France. Tandem flights from the Col de la Forclaz, on the east side of the lake, offer a fifteen-minute flight descending over the turquoise water with a landing on the lakeshore. No experience is necessary, and the sensation of soaring above one of Europe's most beautiful lakes is difficult to surpass.
The town makes an excellent base for a broader alpine itinerary. Chamonix is 90 minutes by road, Megève about an hour, and the Beaufortain valley — source of the magnificent Beaufort cheese and some of the most unspoilt Alpine scenery in France — lies just to the south.
