French Alps
Chamonix is the birthplace of modern alpinism and home to some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on earth. When Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard first summited Mont Blanc in 1786, they launched a sport and a destination that would captivate the world. The Aiguille du Midi cable car, one of the highest in the world, takes you to 3,842 meters in just twenty minutes — stepping onto the observation terrace, where the panorama of Mont Blanc, the Grandes Jorasses, and the Matterhorn in the distance spreads before you, is genuinely life-changing. For those with strong nerves, the Step Into the Void glass cage — a glass box suspended over a 1,000-meter drop — offers the most vertigo-inducing view in the Alps. The Vallee Blanche, a legendary off-piste descent from the Aiguille du Midi down 20 kilometers of glacier to the village, is one of the great skiing adventures in the world (guided descent strongly recommended). In summer, Chamonix transforms into a hiking paradise: the Tour du Mont Blanc, a multi-day trek circumnavigating the massif through France, Italy, and Switzerland, is considered one of the finest long-distance walks in Europe. The Montenvers railway climbs to the Mer de Glace, France's largest glacier, where an ice cave carved fresh each year reveals the deep blue interior of the glacier — though the glacier's retreat makes each visit increasingly poignant. The town itself has evolved from a purely mountaineering base into a sophisticated resort with excellent restaurants, boutique shopping, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere fueled by its international community. Le Bistrot des Sports, despite its casual name, is a local institution for traditional Savoyard cuisine, while Albert Premier holds a Michelin star for its creative mountain gastronomy with panoramic Mont Blanc views. For accommodation, the Hameau Albert Premier offers luxury chalet suites, while the Hotel Mont-Blanc provides a more contemporary experience in the heart of the village. The Mont Blanc Tunnel connects Chamonix to Courmayeur in Italy in just fifteen minutes, making a lunch in the Italian Alps an easy and delightful excursion.
December-March (skiing), June-September (hiking/climbing)
Private chauffeur transfer from Geneva airport (1h15) is far more comfortable than the shuttle buses. Once in Chamonix, book the first Aiguille du Midi cable car of the day — the morning light on Mont Blanc is spectacular and visibility is best before midday.
Travel to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in absolute comfort with a private English-speaking chauffeur and Mercedes S-Class.
